Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu
Ethiopian entrepreneur who built soleRebels into a globally known footwear and lifestyle brand, grounded in local craft, recycled materials, and fair jobs.
When Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu launched soleRebels in 2005 in Zenabwork, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia had almost no export ready consumer brands. She started with a simple belief: local craft can compete globally if design and branding are world class.
She built a factory model that pays fair wages, uses recycled tires and hand woven fabrics, and keeps full production in Ethiopia. Over time, the brand reached international retailers and customers in dozens of countries.
Her path shows how Africa can move from exporting raw materials to exporting global brands.

The Story
From a neighborhood workshop to a world market brand.
Bethlehem grew up in Zenabwork, a low income area of Addis Ababa. Many skilled shoemakers in her community were unemployed. Fresh out of college, she decided to build jobs through a footwear business that could sell far beyond Ethiopia.
She began by upgrading a traditional Ethiopian tire sole shoe into a modern product. The core was not only production but identity: a clear Ethiopian brand with international design, consistent quality, and direct storytelling.
As demand grew, Bethlehem kept manufacturing local instead of moving abroad. The company scaled while maintaining artisan handcrafting and recycled inputs.
